Trendsetters: Revisiting 2023 Pet Fashion Trends, 2024 Predictions

Dogs have always been man’s best friend and for most of us they are more than just pets; they are family. In recent years, we’ve seen pet parents want their furry family members to look just as stylish as they do.

Before we dive into my predictions for 2024 between high-end fashion and accessories, let’s take a look back at what new trends emerged in 2023 and how successful they were in each industry.

Matchy-Matchy. Matching outfits for dogs and their owners have been a popular trend for some time now, and in 2023 they have become even more popular. There’s nothing cuter than a dog and its owner wearing matching outfits, and this trend is a testament to the bond between man and animal.

Barbiecore. From Barbie sneakers, Barbie backpacks, Barbie swimsuits and Barbie hoodies for your dog, we’ve seen it all! “There is no corner of the world that is not pink,” said Richard Dickson, president and chief operating officer of Mattel.

Accessories. In 2023, dog accessories are more popular than ever before. From scarves to hats and jewelry, there were countless ways to dress up our furry friends and add some extra flair to their style. We’ve seen sunglasses for fashion and protection, scarves for warmth and style, and lots of fashion jewelry for pets, including the most popular pet charms.

Sustainable, eco-friendly fashion. Dog collars and leashes made from recycled materials, jackets and sweaters made from organic cotton, toys made from natural materials such as bamboo or hemp, and beds made from recycled materials.

Bold, bright colors. Go bold or go home has been the motto for color in 2023, and while I don’t see it going away any time soon, it’s worth pointing out some popular items such as collars in bright neon colors, harnesses with bold patterns, dog coats , jackets and chunky sweaters in eye-catching colors like hot pink, aqua and green.

The pet apparel market is expected to reach more than $7.66 billion by 2031. In 2021, the market was valued at $5.19 billion. Pet shirts and tops dominated the market by 37.2 percent in 2021, and sweaters and hoodies help short-coated dogs stay warm in cold climates.

As we head into 2024, I believe we will see some exciting new trends taking the world of dog fashion by storm!

There are Gucci hats made in Italy from pink curly wool, Celine travel bags with calfskin trim and a handbag (garbage bag) studded with gold spikes.

Thanks to more and more world-famous designers who create fashionable clothes for pets of different sizes. In the past year, a number of fashion houses have launched pet lines, including Gucci, Burberry, Versace, Celine, Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss and Christian Louboutin.

Some of the newer offerings were inspired by the designers’ own pets. Gucci’s collection of sweaters, coats and travel carriers was created with creative director Alessandro Michele’s Boston terriers Bosco and Osco in mind. Designed by Hedi Slimane, the Celine range of leashes, poo bags and bowls was created for his labradoodle Elvis.

My top predictions for 2024:

Garbage wallets. Already a huge hit this fall, the average plastic trash bag holder doesn’t seem to spoil it for the average pet.

Leg warmers. Leg warmers always seem to come back in style, but did you ever expect dogs to get in on the trend? Well, guess what. Dog leg warmers (just like dog leggings, believe it or not) do exist, and there are surprisingly a TON of options to choose from. From furry and cozy to chic and daring.

Faux fur everything. The Hyper Texture trend is a must-have in fashion. Sash, faux fur, waffle knit, leather and blanket will be everywhere next year, no matter the season.

Bracelet with gems. We see them popping up everywhere. Bangle Leash brings the bangle trend from the runway to dog fashion.

Glitter Glam. Many special occasion outfits feature sequins, sparkling stones and beaded appliqu├ęs.

There will be plenty of exciting dog fashion trends to watch out for in 2024. From trash purses, designer-inspired clothing to leg warmers, there’s something for everyone and every classy coy. As we know, it is important to remember that while fashion is important, functionality and practicality must also be considered. By incorporating these new trends for 2024 into your store, you’ll be one step ahead and your customers (and their pups) will thank you.
