The parents of a teenager whose decomposed body was discovered by new homeowners in a backyard freezer are under arrest, authorities in Alabama said.

They were Michael Shane Halstead (44) and Karen Tysinger Halstead (43). arrested and charged with abuse of a corpseIt was reported by The Birmingham News. The home’s buyers made the gruesome discovery Sunday while cleaning up after the purchase. At 11:37, they called 911 and directed arrivals to the decomposing remains. Logan Michael Halsted, 19, was believed to be deceased and could have died as early as July or August, Henry County Sheriff Eric Blankenship told The Birmingham News.

Halsted’s family, who rented the house, moved out more than a month ago, Blankenship said. Supposedly they had missed out on rent, sources told WDHN-TV. Henry County is southeast of Atlanta.

The owner then sold the house. The buyers found the freezer overturned in the backyard and decided to clean it before taking it away because it was too heavy to load, Blankenship said. They opened it, saw a hand and called the police.

The parents, who were born later Sunday, were being held on $175,000 bail each after a court appearance Monday. Halsted’s body was autopsied at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

“This incident is a very tragic situation and our agency is committed to finding the truth,” Blankenship said, adding that more charges could be filed.
