Hill’s Pet Nutrition opens smart factory to increase canned food production capacity

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, a division of Colgate-Palmolive and the world leader in science-led nutrition, announced the grand opening of its newest manufacturing facility in Tonganoxie, Kansas

The fully engineered, 365,000-square-foot smart facility, located on more than 80 acres, will increase the company’s canned pet food manufacturing capacity and provide a runway for the continued expansion of Hill’s Science Diet and Prescription Diet brands.

“It’s only fitting that as we celebrate Hill’s 75th anniversary, we are able to unveil the next chapter of smart manufacturing innovation in the pet food industry,” he said John Hazlin, president and CEO of Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “Hills Tonganoxie plant helps set the stage for the continued growth of our science-based nutrition, increasing our capacity and our ability to better serve the evolving needs of pets and their owners in United States and all over the world.”

The new Hill’s Tonganoxie the plant represents a leap change in strategic automation and technological advancement in the pet food industry. New Tonganoxie the device has been fully designed to be ‘smart’ – including:

  • Artificial intelligence to power a digital food safety monitoring system
  • Automation and robotic devices
  • Improved food safety systems
  • End-to-end digital process/safety monitoring

The new technology and processes will help improve speed to market by shortening the production cycle, while offering long-term flexibility to innovate new formats and products that help fulfill the company’s mission to support the health and well-being of pets.

Kansas Governor Laura Kellywho attended the plant’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, said, “This investment by Hill’s Pet Nutrition is a testament to my administration’s success in creating a pro-business economy, including the animal health industry,” the governor said. Among the more than 170 varieties of wet pet food the plant will produce will be Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d, the world-renowned original, science-based formula designed for the nutritional treatment of renal (kidney) conditions pioneered by Hill’s founder. Dr. Mark Morris Sr. in 1948, which marked the launch of the first veterinarian-developed line of pet foods to help manage specific conditions through nutrition. Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d was recently updated this year with a new patented microbiome technology that helps reduce harmful waste products.

“Hill’s will leverage technology to collaborate with Hill’s employees and a new state-of-the-art Mission Control Center to provide unprecedented visibility and tracking of all aspects of pet food production from ingredient intake to final packaging,” he said. Chad Sharp, director of production for the Tonganoxie plant. “The manufacturing process is completely ‘closed system’ from mixing ingredients to cooking and filling – designed to prevent exposure of food to environmental contaminants.”

In investing in its operations, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is committed to producing science-based nutritional products in an environmentally responsible manner. The plant was awarded LEED Gold certification, the first plant to achieve this rigorous standard within Colgate-Palmolive. Other features include a water reclamation system that reduces overall water consumption by treating and recycling wastewater on-site to be reused for future use.

Working closely with the Kansas Department of Commerce, Leavenworth County Development Corporation, The Town of TonganoxieEvergy and Kansas Gas Service, Hill’s chose this location for its excellent location, access to a talented and diverse workforce, strong and supportive community and proximity to distributors and suppliers.

The project created more than 100 jobs Leavenworth County, Kansas.
